FBC England steps up, surpasses offering goal

EDITOR’S NOTE: Following is an update to a story published Dec. 15 in the ABN.

ENGLAND – When he assumed his duties at First Baptist Church, England, in October, one of the first things new Pastor Robby Sherman suggested was raising the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering goal from $3,600 to $5,000.

Not only did the congregation rise to the challenge, the end result far exceeded Sherman’s expectations.

“I was just elated to not hear every pastor’s nightmare: ‘We have never done it that way before,’” Sherman said.

The kickoff event for the offering was a silent and live auction, which netted $4,528. The sale of Lottie Moon Christmas ornaments and individual contributions brought the final total to $8,350.

But the generosity of First Baptist members was not limited to the annual Christmas offering.

In addition to a substantial increase in weekly contributions to the church’s general offering, members organized and donated about $10,000 worth of toys and clothing for the local Angel Tree project, assisted with a prison ministry Christmas drive and helped support the community food pantry. The church averages 125-150 in worship attendance, and on Christmas Day, there were more than 250 people in attendance.

The new year got off to a great start, as on Jan. 1, Sherman baptized three adults and four children.

Evelyn Adams is a member of First Baptist Church, England, and a retired employee of the England Democrat.
